Podnet pre výstavbu vodnej stavby Môťová vzišiel na základe požiadaviek povojnového rastu priemyselných podnikov vo Zvolene. Tie k svojej činnosti vyžadovali naliehavé riešenie pri zabezpečovaní vody. Nádrž bola vytvorená prehradením toku Slatina zemnou homogénnou priehradou. Geologickú skladbu podložia priehrady tvoria neogénne sopečné horniny - andezity, tufy, tufity a andezitové konglomeráty a štvrtohorné sedimenty. Do podložia je priehrada zaviazaná ozubom. Výstavba vodného  diela si nevyžiadala žiadne presídlenie obyvateľstva, likvidáciu obytných domov a ani stavieb iného druhu. Zaplavené územie tvorili prevažne  lúky a pasienky. Funkčné objekty vodnej stavby pozostávajú z priepadových blokov, dnového výpustu, vodnej elektrárne a z čerpacej stanice. Plnenie nádrže bolo zahájené v roku 1957. Po dosiahnutí maximálnej hladiny bolo vykonané zhodnotenie funkcie zemnej hrádze. Toto potvrdilo existenciu lokálnych anomálií filtračného pohybu vody v jej podloží. V snahe zachovania požadovanej bezpečnosti priehrady a spoľahlivosti prevádzky nádrže tu bola v rokoch 2007 – 2008 vykonaná rekonštrukcia. Pozostávala   z obnovenia funkčnosti pätného drénu, sanácie betónových konštrukcií a doplnenia pozorovacieho systému. Nádrž Môťová slúži na vyrovnávanie minimálnych prietokov na toku Slatina, zabezpečuje úžitkovú vodu pre drevársky priemysel a pre tepláreň  Zvolen. Jej druhoradým účelom je výroba elektrickej energie. Keďže nádrž je bezprostrednej blízkosti Zvolena, využíva sa aj na rekreáciu, športové rybárstvo a pestovanie vodných športov.

The first impulse for the construction of the hydraulic structure Môťová appeared when after the Second World War industrial plants in Zvolen began to rise. There was an urgent need of a water supply for their operation. The reservoir was created by damming up the river Slatina with an earthfill homogeneous dam. The subsoil of the dam consists of neogene volcanic rocks – andesites, tuffs, tufits, andesite conglomerates and quaternary sediments. It was sealed by a cut-off trench. The construction of the hydraulic structure did not require any relocation of inhabitants, demolition of buildings or any other structures. The area that was flooded was mainly grassland. The appurtenant structures of the dam consist of spillway blocks, a bottom outlet, a hydro power plant and a pumping station. The filling of the reservoir started in 1957. After the maximal water level had been reached, an evaluation of the earthfill dam function was executed, which confirmed the existence of the local anomalies in the filtration flow in the subsoil. To preserve the required safety of the dam and a reliable operation of the reservoir, a reconstruction was carried out between 2007 and 2008. During the reconstruction, the toe drain function was restored, the concrete constructions were treated and the monitoring improved. Môťová Reservoir serves to regulate the minimal discharges on the river Slatina and to supply the timber industry and the heating plant Zvolen with water. Its secondary purpose is to generate hydro power. As the reservoir is situated near the town of Zvolen, it is also used for recreation, sport fishing and water sports.
